West Papua Human Rights Center, USA

On Sunday, July 14 supporters of the West Papua Human Rights Center gathered outside the Indonesian embassy in Washington, D.C. to raise awareness about the human rights violations occurring in the territory. Americans and West Papuans alike held signs that read “Free West Papua” and “Free Press in West Papua” to spread their message.

The West Papua Human Rights Center organized the protest to shed light on their requests of the Indonesian government and the International community. Their requests are as follows:

The Center urges the Indonesian government to stop the human rights abuses occurring in the territory.

Allow a U.N. “Fact Finding Mission” to enter West Papua and carry out an independent investigation of the human rights situation.
Recognize the West Papuan Declaration of Independence by allowing a “vote of self-determination “and their right to statehood. West Papua’s sovereignty was denied during the Act of Free Choice in 1969. The release of all peaceful political prisoners currently held in West Papua.

The West Papua Human Rights Center will continue to organize acts of civil disobedience until West Papua is a sovereign state, Mr. Herman Wainggai urges support for this peaceful protest.
