Anwar Sadat, director of the South Sumatera chapter of WALHI

On January 29, 2013, Indonesian police responded to a peaceful protest by environmental activists and farmers in Palembang, South Sumatera, by beating and brutalizing Anwar Sadat, director of the South Sumatera chapter of WALHI (Friends of the Earth Indonesia). They then arrested him, along with 25 others from the office of WALHI and the Sriwijaya Farmers Union, and charged them with assault.

Please join us, through this Change.org petition set up by our Indonesian partners, in calling for the police to drop charges against Anwar and the other activists and to end the brutality.

The protests were sparked by resistance against a proposal to build the world’s largest paper mill, which would turn South Sumatera’s remaining forests into pulp. Today, more than 1,000 peasants have gathered in front of the local parliament of South Sumatera to demand an end to the brutality against both people and the forest.

It is the state’s duty to protect citizens’ welfare, not to use violence against peaceful protesters. These arrests represent an alarming threat to the peaceful efforts of Indonesian environmentalists and farmers.

Demand that charges against Anwar and the other activists be dropped.

Standing with you,
Jeff Conant,
International forests program director,
Friends of the Earth
