From the killing of Mako Tabuni, the deputy chairman of the National Committee for West Papua or KNPB, to the recent killing of another KNPB figures, Paul Horis, it’s been a bloody time.

There were hopes for talk rather than shooting, with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono formally agreeing to dialogue and twice meeting Papuan church leaders.

On the Papuan side, five representatives have been appointed as negotiators with the Indonesian government, including Octo Mote.

Presenter: Liam Cochrane

Speakers: Octo Mote, Tom and Andy Berstein Senior Human Rights Fellow at the Yale University Law School
